Dear Assemblyman (Senator) (Their Name),

I am writing this letter to voice my opposition to Assembly Bill A5435  (Senate Bill S4378), which would eliminate licensed recreational motor vehicle use on certain Long Island State, County, and Town Beaches where such recreational access is now permitted, regulated, and policed by law enforcement. Such access is now allowed these designated beaches by New York State, Suffolk County, and certain Towns in Suffolk County for a multitude of recreational uses. Some examples of these uses are beach camping, surfing, picnicking, shorebird watching, and surf fishing. This bill, if enacted, will hurt many a Long Island Middle Class Working Family who have enjoyed these recreational activities on Long Island Shorelines for generations. In addition these Licensed Beach Vehicle Permits issued by New York State Parks, Suffolk Country Parks, and certain Towns in Suffolk County generate a huge amount of revenue that is used to supplement the limited budgets of all these Governmental Entities. The enactment of this law, in addition to curtailing these recreational activities enjoyed by many of Long Island’s Families, will also hurt the limited budgets of those governmental entities who depend on this revenue. This in turn means higher fees on other park users or a raise in taxes. In addition there are many businesses that will be impacted if this law is passed. These are the local tackle shops, deli and food stores, camping supply stores, campers and trailer dealerships, 4X4 truck and suv dealerships, and sporting good stores. All these recreational activities add to multi-million dollar recreational industry here on Long Island. This industry generates jobs and sales taxes, which if this law is passed, will be impacted.

We the taxpayers who live and work on Long Island pay the highest local taxes in the nation, and in return for the taxes and the beach access permit fees we pay, a day of camping, surfing, shorebird watching, or surf fishing from a licensed beach vehicle is not a lot to ask for, and cost the government very little. There is no scientific proof that driving on the beach contributes to beach erosion. Licensed Beach vehicles have been driven on the beach since Ford Model “A” times, and the beaches are still here showing no wear or tear. To take these recreational activities away from the average working family with this law, will insure that only the rich, who have the means to secure their own private beachfront property, will be the only ones who can enjoy these recreational activities. As your constituent, I request that you vote no for A5435 (S4378) for the reasons mentioned above.

Dear State Senator or State Assemblymen

We would like to voice our opposition to the Assembly Bill A5435 (Senate Bill S4378), which would eliminate licensed recreational motor vehicles the use of certain Long Island, State, County, and Town Beaches. Presently, recreational access is permitted, regulated, and law enforced. Many Long Islander’s use the beaches for camping, surfing, picnicking, shorebird watching, sun bathing, swimming, surf fishing, or to take a drive on the beach to see the ocean or even just to take a walk. Licensed beach vehicle permits that are issued by New York State Parks, Suffolk Country Parks, and certain Towns in Suffolk County generate a large amount of revenue that is used to supplement Government Entities. To endorse this bill to restrict beach activities by Long Island families would damage the budgets of the government that use this revenue. Without these additional monies, it will bring higher park fees and/or a raise in taxes.

Many businesses would be financially impacted by the law if passed; tackle shops, delicatessens, food stores, camping stores, camping supply stores, campers and trailer dealerships, 4X4 truck and SUV dealerships, sporting good stores, and gas stations. There would be a “multi-million dollar” loss for the small Long Island business man. Additionally, the companies that service the recreational industry on Long Island would have a drastic fall in annual business income as the people would no longer need their services.

We always thought we had “freedom of choice”. It would be devastating to take away the love of the land that we so cherish.  We were born and raised on Long Island. We work here on the Island. We raised our children here, and they are raising their children here. Senator Brodsky, who has proposed this bill, does not live or work on Long Island. Yet, because of him we can loose the right to our beaches.  We pay the highest local taxes in the nation, and in return for the taxes and the beach access permit fees we pay, a day of camping, surfing, shorebird watching, or surf fishing from a licensed beach vehicle is not a lot to ask for, and cost the government very little.

There is no scientific proof that driving on the beach contributes to beach erosion. Research has proven that beach erosion is a force of nature beyond our control.  We respect our beaches.  We take pride in helping to keep our beaches clean. If this bill is passed it would hurt many Long Island families who have enjoyed these recreational activities on Long Island shorelines for many years. Therefore, we are fighting for the right to keep recreational vehicle access to our beaches.  Please fight with us, not against us. Our rights should not be taken away from the beach use..

As your constituents, we request that you vote “NO” for A5435 (S4378)

 Sincerely,
